at the black snapper design studio it’s all about love of color and design and texture.  and warmth.  true warmth inside and out.

what it’s about
who we are
black snapper design is a studio run by a sybaritic lover of fine fabrics and natural beauty who values soulful things made by hand (or with our trusty old sewing machine) over things made by giant corporations out of cheap materials.  don’t get us wrong, we love some giant corporations.  take, for example, um, let’s see...
well, anyway, we live in new york city and comb the fabric shops for stand-out colors and textures.  then, back in the studio, we lay out color combination after color combination until we know for sure what speaks best to us.  after we play with the textures a bit, we sew.  sometimes by hand, but mostly with our trusty old bernina.  the “quilting” is, like us:  a bit non-traditional.  sometimes we forgo the batting altogether and stitch curlicues, achieving a beautiful drape that’s appropriate for a wrap or shawl.  at other times we stuff them like true winter blankets and zig zag on top of them to our hearts content.  and as you might guess, our hearts are quite contented.

after you’ve finished exploring our quilts, do take a moment to visit the websites of a few of our heroes, kindred spirits & allies...
what we do
we take high quality natural fabrics and, using color combinations that we find well pleasing to the eye (and our spirit), create throws and scarves and such that we hope will bring you joy every time you sit on your sofa or curl up with a book or go out into the cold.  little bits of handmade joy.  that you can keep for yourself.  or share.

and why “black snapper”?
well, that’s a bit of a long story.  it starts in a white shoe law firm in new jersey and ends, more or less, at a yoga retreat in the yucatan peninsula.  suffice it to say that it’s one of the nick-names of our (often) fearless leader, lisa slocum.  the black snapper is a (deliciously) irreverent lover of nature and follower of bliss.

a note about quilt use and care
as with all one-of-a-kind handmade works of love, these quilts are intended to be used gently.  please keep them away from liquids and messes, generally.  steam works very well for wrinkles and refreshing (set your iron on “silk”).  dry cleaning is recommended for anything more.  a good shake (or even the vacuum!) is perfect for removing light dust and dirt.  please do not wash these silk and wool items in the washing machine or attempt to hand wash them.  we wouldn’t want to see you cry.
